Can Collagen Supplements Really Slow Down Aging?

Numerous problems can arise when the levels of collagen are depleted because this protein affects so much of our bodies. Its loss can cause our skin to thin out and can accelerate the development of wrinkles. It’s loss causes our connective tissues to degenerate, leaving our joints unprotected. They rub against one another and cause pain, bone erosion and inflammation. Unless this loss is stopped, or at least slowed, the result is damage and possibly permanent, crippling disability.
Collagen supplements come in many forms, including pills, injections and liquids. These supplements promise to compensate for age related collagen reduction. They claim to slow down or stop the aging process by replacing the lost collagen. They are manufactured in different ways, but generally are processed from the tissues of cows, pigs, chickens and even fish.
The three main types of collagen supplements on the market today are type one, two and three. The type with the most clinical date behind it is type two and is used to build strength and stability in the joints. Your body repairs and maintains cartilage and tendons using this type of protein. Using type two collagen supplements for joint health has shown promising results in trials.
If, however, you are trying to fight the visible effects of aging with collagen supplements you’ll need one that contains types one and three. Your body also uses these two types to build and strengthen your arteries and organs in addition to your skin. Your body has the ability to prioritize the use of supplements. Unfortunately your skin is at the bottom of the list. Your body will first treat your arteries and organs so this type of collagen supplement will rarely deliver the effect you desire.
Collagen supplements carry few dangerous side effects. The main one is the problem of allergic reactions. These supplements are derived from animal tissues and if you’re allergic to the animal you may have adverse affects from the supplement.
