The processed foods we eat in excess, for example refined sugars, are perpetrators in depleting us of some minerals and vitamins. For instance, too much sugar in the system can lead to a depletion of zinc, chromium, magnesium and folic acid. Also, a fat individual who is exercising continually and consuming less than usual may need mineral and vitamin augmentation. Many Jamaicans do not meet their nutritive necessities thru consumption alone. Vitamine

Supplements are meant to be an addition to typical diet and not to replace required food. When doubtful about our body’s nutritional inadequacies, it is safe not to beef up outside the nutriments found in a fine quality multiple vitamin / mineral supplement. This is very relevant for the mineral iron which is probably damaging when oversupplied. It’s a great idea to check with a medical doctor o pharmacist before bolstering.

Trace elements Trace elements are needed in minute quantities, but contribute to health in a giant way. Chromium, copper, iron, selenium and zinc are examples. Chromium increases the cells ‘ sensitivity to insulin which helps to regulate blood sugar and augment heat production for weight reduction. Chromium helps to build lean tissue, and heavy exercise and injury increase the body’s demand for it and doubtless lead to a deficiency. Chromium is mainly available in the form of chromium picolinate supplement. A daily dose of fifty to four hundred micrograms is advocated for reinforcement.

Calcium Calcium is the commonest mineral in the body, and most of it actually is carried in the bones. It is important for heart and nerve function, muscle tone and contraction. Dieting can shift the amount of calcium absorbed from food, exhausting the body’s supply. For adult dieters, 1,000 milligrams of calcium daily is counseled. Remember that vitamin C and vitamin D improve its absorption.

Some latest studies with calcium show some promise for weight loss ; diets high in calcium may help break down fat and result in weight loss. Calcium may do it by binding to fat in the gut and carrying it out of the body. But other studies counter these observations, so we wait for yet more studies.
