The Emu is the second largest bird in the world and a native of Australia. While emus are flightless birds, they do have the ability to run at great speeds, reaching over 50 kilometers per hour with strides stretching over 9 feet. The emu is thought to have been roaming the Earth for thousands of years and because of which, the Australian Aborigines have been using the emu as a source of food, clothing and spiritual sustenance for the last few hundred years. While the emu is an important cultural icon for Australia, it is also farmed for its meat and oil.

In simple terms, emu oil is an oil that is made from the fat of the emu. When the emu meat is processed for sale, the fat is removed and then refined to produce the oil. The refining method consists of sterilization and deodorizing processes. Some forms of emu oil are only ‘rendered’ rather than refined, meaning that some products developed from emu oil may contain contaminants, so it is advisable to look for only refined oil.

For thousands of years, emu oil has been used by the native Australian Aborigines for medical reasons to treat skin injuries such as cuts and bruises, as well as burns, strains and sprains. On top of this, emu oil is also a proven anti-inflammatory that works well in reducing inflammation due to localized injuries such as muscle aches and pains. It is therefore known to be a good substitute for ibuprofen.

The two most prominent and useful vitamins in emu oil are vitamin A and vitamin E. Vitamin A plays a huge roll in aiding the body with functions such as skin regeneration, bone metabolism and in the immune system. Vitamin E is well known for being an effective antioxidant, and because of that it helps to protect other oxygen sensitive compounds such as vitamin A against oxidation reactions. Emu oil also contains essential fatty acids such as omega 3, 6 and 9 which the human body can not produce but are important for our health.

This kind of oil can be used for hundreds of applications as well as those listed above. Due to containing powerful antioxidants, and skin regeneration and repair agents, emu oil is very popularly used in the manufacturing of some skin care products. Emu oil can help to moisturize and thicken your skin, whilst also preventing further damage by forming a protective layer on your skin.
